Slava Raškaj
1877. 1906.
Education: With Bela Csikos Sessia , (Zagreb, 1896.-1899.)
|
Biography: Deaf and mute from birth, she was educated in the Institute for the Deaf and Mute in Vienna (1885-1893), where she also received the first elements of painting. She soon became an expert in painting vignettes. She returned to Ozalj, where the local schoolmaster Ivan Muha Otoić helped to develop her artistic talent. He took her to Zagreb and managed to make her a private student of the renowned Croatian painter Bela Csikos Sessia in 1896, who introduced her into the Society of Croatian Artists. In 1899, Slava returned to Ozalj, and in the same year she stayed at Zlatar, where she visited the manor of the Car family, and met a young man, the future painter Bogumil Car. She stayed at Orahovica in 1900 with her sister Paula who was a teacher there. From 1901, the first signs of mental disease appeared. She painted scenery as from within her inner self, introducing into the paintings demonic motives from the deepest layers of the subconscious. No art historian has yet dared to interpret Slava Raškaj's late works from the esoteric point of view, i.e. by correlating the irrational and mysterious spheres with her genius. She died in the State Mental Institution, after spending there 3 years, 9 months and 11days. |
