Biography: Croatian Biographical Lexicon shows how many scholars, writers and artists owe their origins to this Primorje stock from the time of the Illyrian Movement until today. Dora is the daughter of a university professor of zoology (co-founder and the chairman of the Croatian Naturalist Society) and Minka de Novak, and the sister of Bogumil Car (the most outstanding representative of the Croatian art deco painting). Unlike her brother who led a rakish life, Dora spent her life in self-denial as a dedicated arts teacher in the Girls' college and then in the Second Girls' Secondary School until she retired in 1942. Although authorities like Matko Peić, member of academy, rank her water colours among the most distinguished Croatian water colour painters, her first one man exhibition was organised only 33 years after her death, in 1977, from the donation by Dr. Josip Kovačić to the City of Zagreb.
